Information for UK theory test candidates
If you’re planning to book a UK theory test for a car, you must be at least 17 years old and have
a valid provisional driving licence,
which you can apply for when you are 16. Without a provisional driving licence, you will not be able to take a theory test.
When applying for your provisional licence, you will have to provide details of each address you have lived in for the
past three years.
You can apply for a provisional licence online or via an application form available at your local Post Office.
When you apply for your provisional licence, you will need to provide an original identification document – such as a passport or birth certificate. You will need to send a passport-sized photograph, accompanying your application.
A provisional driving licence will cost you £34 if you apply online or £43 if you submit your application by post.
Your provisional licence will be sent to you within three weeks.
