UK Driving Theory Test

The UK driving theory test was introduced in July 1996 as a written test, before being computerised in 2000. The original theory test featured 50 multiple-choice questions, designed to assess a learner driver’s knowledge of driving theory.

In November 2002, the theory test was upgraded to include the hazard perception section, and in July 2015, new CGI video clips replaced the real-life clips used for the hazard perception exam.

UK Driving Theory Test | What You Need to Know!

The current UK driving theory test consists of two parts… the multiple-choice section and the hazard perception element. The entire theory test can last up to 90 minutes. You have 57 minutes to complete the multiple-choice section, while the hazard perception section can take up to 30 minutes.

Before you take the multiple-choice test, you are given the option to start a 15 minute practice session. This helps you to familiarise yourself with the exam and gives you a taste of the type of questions you can expect to answer.

Upon completing the multiple-choice exam, you have the option to start the hazard perception section immediately or take a three-minute break. Taking a break is recommended!

Before you start the hazard perception test, you have the option to watch a short explainer video, which demonstrates how the exam works.

You must pass both the multiple-choice and hazard perception sections of the theory test to receive your theory test pass certificate! The pass marks for each section are:

· 43, or more, out of 50 for the multiple choice section

· 44, or more, out of 75, for the hazard perception exam

You will be told if you have passed or failed immediately after your theory test!
