The DVLA has launched a new look photocard driving licence Book Your Theory Test Today reports.
As part of sweeping changes taking place across the DVLA at present the photocard driving licence has been reinvigorated with a whole host of new features, writes the Book Your Theory Test Today blogger.
For those of you who still hold the ‘old’ style provisional licence or full driving licence, don’t panic, you don’t need to do anything. All current licences remain valid and will be updated accordingly as they are renewed or replaced.
The Book Your Theory Test Today blogger says: “The improvements are being made largely to improve security and prevent identity fraud, which has become rife across theory test and driving test centres throughout the UK. Stolen licences are also being sold on the black market, so any way in which the DVLA can tackle such security issues is being implemented.
What Changes Have Been Made?
The new look card, supplied by Gemalto (UK), has a fresh new design with a range of additional security features that have been extensively improved. New additions include a security holograph, raised surface pattern and an Optical Variable Ink (OVI), which aim to keep the driving licence totally secure.
In a statement from the DVLA, they said: “The brand new security enhancements will help us to combat fraud.â€
Book Your Theory Test Today understands that the information has been released to ready motorists for a whole series of changes due to be implemented in 2014. With the looming merger of the DSA and VOSA, a revamp of the UK theory test and the possible introduction of staged driving licences for young drivers, changes to the driving licence were seemingly inevitable.
The DVLA has also published the information for organisations, which carry out regular checks of photocard driving licences, insisting that they familiarise themselves with changes to the appearance of the card.
The Book Your Theory Test Today blogger writes: “If organisations, which are responsible for checking the validity of driving licences, identify a licence that they suspect of being false or used for fraudulent activity they will be able to check the validity of the licence via a new online service.
A spokesperson for the DVLA said: “The new online service will be particularly beneficial for companies that employ drivers as part of their business, particularly logistics based businesses. Company owners will be able to check the validity of licences for couriers.â€
Book Your Theory Test Today understands that the new driving licences will be phased in gradually as other changes take place. The new licences are expected to be in full use by the end of 2014.
